Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the past, present, and future of swing dance, from its beginnings on the jazz hall dance floors of 1920s Harlem to its modern adoption by communities throughout the world.

Led by Bobby White — world champion swing dancer, instructor, historian, and published author — this virtual experience, bound to sweep you off your feet, will include:

  • The origins of swing dance and its strong Black American cultural roots
  • The cultural significance of Harlem nightlife during New York’s Jazz Age, from the iconic Savoy Ballroom, to famous Harvest Moon Ball contests, to legendary performance troupes like “Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers”
  • The rise in popularity of swing dance and how it became a favorite regional spectacle and feature film showcase
  • Rare photos and videos showcasing swing dance throughout the ages
  • The 101 on different swing dance styles, including lindy hop, shag, and balboa

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Bobby — any and all questions about swing dance in New York are welcomed and encouraged!

Bobby is an international swing dance instructor and also has a sordid past in newspaper, magazine, and fiction writing. He has won championships of many different sorts and teaches Balboa, Lindy Hop, and Solo Jazz with multiple partners across the world, where he gives talks on both historical and personal adventures in jitterbug history. He is the writer of the swing dance blog www.Swungover.com, and is the co-founder of the Harvest Moon Hoppers and founder of the Swung Furies, New York-based swing dance performance groups that honor the Black American pioneers of performance Lindy Hop.
