The Jewish Response to Racism

The hard-fought 2016 presidential campaign laid bare a national divide on a wide range of policy concerns and has energized a dangerous segment of our populace whose hateful rhetoric advanced from the margins to the mainstream. In response—and in light of the conversation we began last year about Jews and the #BlackLivesMatter movement—we’ll discuss the connections and distinctions between racism and anti-Semitism, as well as the Jewish community’s responsibility to the fight for racial justice.

  • April N. Baskin is the Union for Reform Judaism’s Vice President of Audacious Hospitality, as well as a member of the Selah Leadership Network and the immediate past president of the Jewish Multiracial Network.
  • Stosh Cotler is the CEO of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, where her efforts have landed her on the Forward 50 list of American Jews who have had the most impact on the national conversation.
  • Eric Ward is a longtime US civil rights strategist whose philanthropic career has included stints at the Ford Foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies, Social Justice Fund Northwest and the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation.
