John McPhee talks with Peter Hessler

John McPhee began contributing to The New Yorker in 1963. He is the author of thirty-two books, all of them based on his New Yorker writings. Among them are “Encounters with the Archdruid,” which was nominated for a National Book Award; “The Control of Nature”; “Looking for a Ship”; “The Ransom of Russian Art”; and “Annals of the Former World,” which won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. His most recent book, “Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process,” was published on September 5, 2017.

Peter Hessler joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 2000. From 2000 to 2007, he was the magazine’s correspondent in China, and then, from 2011 to 2016, he reported from Egypt. His first book, “River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze,” won the Kiriyama Prize and was short-listed for the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. His second book, “Oracle Bones,” was a finalist for the National Book Award. Hessler was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. He is currently writing a book about Egypt, “The Buried: An Archaeology of the Egyptian Revolution.”
