Justice Travel Presents: To End a War

Justice Travel is a social impact travel company, bridging travel and human rights. In partnership with front line human rights activists, community leaders, and journalists, we offer unique travel programs around the world, and work with our returned travelers to advocate on behalf of our partners. One of our first tours in 2018 will be to Colombia, where a fragile peace process is offering new hope after decades of conflict.

We will inaugurate our launch with a special event at Riverside Church, historic monument to the civil rights movement in the United States. ‘To End a War’ is an intimate observational documentary about the peace process in Colombia. After the film, we will have a dynamic discussion with Gabriel Tobias, founder of Justice Travel, and via skype, Andrei Gomez-Suarez, director of Rodeemos el Dialogo (ReD), a key civil society actor in the peace process, and Juan J. Orjuela, Justice Travel Country Representative in Colombia.

This event will explore a personal side of this historic moment, and look at how travel to Colombia can help support activists in the country who are working to ensure a new generation of peace. ‘To End a War’ explores what it takes both strategically and spiritually for a nation of 50 million to move from hatred to forgiveness, from war to peace. The 52-year fight between the Colombian Government and the Marxist guerilla FARC-EP is the longest running civil war in Latin America. Two generations of Colombians have never known what it means to live in peace. Since September 2012 the Government and FARC have held Peace Talks behind closed doors on neutral ground in Havana, Cuba. With unprecedented access to both political leaders, President Juan Manuel Santos and FARC Chief Commander Timochenko, this intimate observational documentary film goes behind the scenes during this profound moment in Colombia’s history.

Andrei Gómez-Suárez is Director of the Rodeemos el Diálogo (ReD) Foundation, teacher at Alberto Merani Institute (Bogotá), and member of the Exile and Reconciliation Commission (CER). He currently lives in Bogotá. Andrei is the author of Genocide Geopolitics and Transnational Networks (Routledge, 2015) and El Triunfo del No (Icono, 2016). His research on the UP genocide and the Santos-FARC peace talks has been published in the Journal of Genocide Research, Third World Quarterly, International Community Law Review, Revista de Estudios sobre Genocidio, Estudios Políticos, and in various edited books. His research interests are: geopolitics, conflict resolution, education, and transitional justice. Andrei has taught on Colombian Politics, International Security, International Relations, Peace Processes and Post-Conflict Reconstruction, and Transitional Justice at the University of Sussex, and the University of Los Andes, the University of Cauca and Externado University in Colombia. Andrei studied International Relations (DPhil) and Contemporary War and Peace Studies (MA) at the University of Sussex and Conflict Resolution (GD) and Political Science (BS) at the University of Los Andes.
