Landscapes of New York with Elizabeth Barlow Rogers

Come meet the Green Metropolis.

Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, the woman who launched the restoration of Central Park in the 1980s, introduces us to seven remarkable green spaces in and around New York City, giving us the history — both natural and human — of how they have been transformed over time. Discover a nature refuge along the spine of Staten Island; the mosaic of endangered marshes surviving as bird sanctuaries in Jamaica Bay; a forest in Inwood Hill which sheltered Native Americans and Revolutionary soldiers; the Central Park Ramble, an artful wilderness in the middle of the city; Roosevelt Island, site of the 1970s’ “new town in town”; Freshkills, the twenty-two-hundred-acre park built on what was once the world’s largest landfill; and the High Line, an aerial promenade resurrected from an abandoned railroad.
