While some argue that the authentic New York City is a thing of the past, photographer Brian Rose found a fresh perspective by seeing the city through the eyes of his young son. Casting aside nostalgia and mourning for a lost era, Rose’s latest book, Last Stop, captures the city as it exists today by showcasing the diverse neighborhoods found at the very ends of the subway lines. His photographs reveal a vibrant tapestry of ethnicities, languages, and cultures, documenting surprising discoveries in the city’s far-flung reaches—from the rubble-strewn shorelines of Tottenville and the bungalows of Howard Beach to granite test slabs for Grand Central Terminal hidden in the woods of Van Cortlandt Park. By sharing the stories of the local New Yorkers he met along the way, Rose offers a compelling look at the resilient spirit of the modern metropolis.
