Lecture on the History of Chinese Opera Overseas and Live Performance
Learn about traditional Chinese opera as an inter-cultural bridge, Mei Lanfang’s US tour in 1930, and the American audience’s reception of Chinese dramatic art. There will be a live performance by professional Peking Opera performer Michelle Yang.
Lecturer: Mr. Philip Valenti, an American author and historian based in New York City. He earned his degree from Queens College and has written and published extensively on American history and Chinese opera’s impact on Europe and America.
Performer: Ms. Michelle Yang was a professional Peking Opera performer in China who graduated from the Tianjin Institute of Art and Communication University of China, where she studied Beijing opera, Kunqu, dance, movie and TV acting, and broadcasting. She is a resident artist of New York Chinese Opera Society and New York Kunqu society Kunqu workshop teacher.
