Part of Lectures on Tap — professors, experts, and storytellers giving thought-provoking lectures in NYC bars. Location provided upon registration.
Scholar Ryan L. Bince, PhD, uncovers how the United States government has responded to mass collective action from its founding to today. Rather than focusing on movements and leaders, the lecture examines the other side of the story — the letters, military treatises, manuals, and training videos that shaped official strategies for managing protest, riot, and rebellion. Bince traces the evolution of laws, institutions, and key figures that have defined "riot control" in America, and what that history reveals about the boundaries of democratic dissent.
Ryan L. Bince is a recent PhD graduate from Northwestern University's program in Rhetoric and Public Culture. His research centers on crowds, security culture, and political theory. He has held visiting and fellowship positions at Central European University in Budapest and Alaska's Tidelines Institute.
