Back by popular demand! Film scholar and NYU instructor Howard Oboler shows clips and discusses the particular appeal of Hollywood’s biggest stars. There never was a woman like Gilda! When Margarita Cansino, the American-born daughter of a Spanish father and Irish mother, dyed her hair dark red and changed her name to Rita Hayworth, her Hollywood career took off. She glowed in movies like Cover Girl, You Were Never Lovelier, Blood and Sand, Lady from Shanghai (directed by her husband, Orson Welles) and, of course Gilda. During World War II, her seductive pin-up photo was next to Betty Grable’s in popularity. See for yourself why she was dubbed “The Love Goddess.”
