“How to be Less Stupid about Race” with Crystal Fleming

“How to be Less Stupid about Race” by Crystal M. Fleming

An evening with author Crystal M. Fleming, a writer and sociologist who has penned a work of social criticism, humorous personal anecdotes, and analysis of the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on racism. In this just-published book, she takes on the so-called “national conversation on race” and what she calls “racial stupidity in the Obama era.” She recounts how she came to understand the reality of Barack Obama as a war criminal, and goes on to slam Trump’s open white supremacy combined with vehement denials of racism. The book draws on critical race theory, as well as her own experiences as a queer black millennial college professor and researcher.

Crystal Fleming is associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at Stony Brook University, and is a contributing writer for The Root, Black Agenda Report, Vox, and Everyday Feminism. She’s also the author of Resurrecting Slavery: Racial Legacies and White Supremacy in France.
