Lessons in Equity from Culturally Specific Institutions: Beyond the “Target Program”

In recent years, museums have been called to diversify their audiences and staff. Last month’s Museum magazine, for example, dedicated an entire issue to “Equity in the Workforce.” Too often, however, well-meaning institutions seeking to tackle “diversity” launch culturally-specific programming that caters to a specific demographic for a day or month, but fails to address underlying inequity.

Culturally specific institutions offer more sweeping models of inclusivity that have been challenged and refined in response to their constituents over decades. In this panel, four culturally specific institutions will discuss their histories, lessons learned and best practices beyond the “target program” including: democratizing curatorial narratives, understanding and building trust with disparate communities, and approaching personnel as policy.

Join us from 5:30-6:00 for gallery exploration, snacks and refreshments based on MOCA’s current exhibition, Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America. The featured program will begin at 6pm.
