Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary

In collaboration with the New-York Historical Society, the Bryant Park Reading Room presents a series of free lectures on popular topics including biography, the Supreme Court, Civil War history, and more.

In 1912, former president Theodore Roosevelt came out of retirement to challenge his close friend and handpicked successor, William Howard Taft, for the Republican presidential nomination. When Roosevelt failed to secure a spot on the ticket, he spearheaded a resistance campaign that split the Party in two. In a timely discussion, historian Geoffrey Cowan revisits the dramatic fight for the presidency that forever changed American politics.

Geoffrey Cowan, president of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and the Annenberg Family Chair in Communication Leadership at the University of Southern California, is the author of Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary.
