Let’s Get Ethical! Lizzie Borden Edition

Life is full of complicated ethical questions: Should doping be permitted in sports? What, if anything, do we owe to the incarcerated? Are reality TV shows ethical? Can we program robot to be moral beings? What does the future of reproduction hold, and will men be able to have babies?

October’s Topic: Lizzie Borden & the Ethics of Dark Tourism

Join Dr. Elizabeth Yuko (“Everything I Know About Bioethics I Learned from The Golden Girls”) to discuss the ethics of dark tourism, using the example of Lizzie Borden. Acquitted for the axe murders of her father and step-mother in 1892, Lizzie became one of America’s first media sensations. Interest in Lizzie has yet to wane, and interested parties can visit — and even sleep in — the house where the murders took place. This raises questions of when it is appropriate to visit sites for former tragedies. If so, what makes some places (like the Lizzie Borden House) acceptable, while others (like the classrooms at Columbine High School) seem in poor taste?
