“So where are you really from?” “Can I touch your hair?” These are common examples of microaggressions (e.g. subtle forms of discrimination). This talk, given by the original research team that developed the microaggression taxonomy, will highlight research from their new book entitled, “Microaggression Theory: Influence and Implications.” The authors will describe how the invisible nature of this phenomenon prevents perpetrators from confronting their own complicity in creating psychological dilemmas for marginalized groups. They will also discuss how prejudice, privilege, safe spaces, and cultural appropriation have become themes in our contentious social and political discourse.
