LIVE from the NYPL | Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra: In Praise of the Unlived Life

“Our unlived lives—the lives we live in fantasy, the wished-for lives—are often more important to us than our so-called lived lives.”  —Adam Phillips, Missing Out

“One of the big problems with American music today is that there just aren’t enough songs inspired by psychoanalytic essays.” —Ethan Lipton

Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra lead us on a journey through the Library in a night of original songs inspired by the writing of psychoanalyst Adam Phillips. Guided by references found in Phillips’ work—which range from fiction to poetry, Shakespeare to Freud—the band will go into the Library’s stacks to explore the existential sock-in-the-chops of being human. For the season finale of LIVE, join Ethan and his band for a performance that could take place nowhere else than The New York Public Library.

This event, the Richard B. Salomon Distinguished Lecture, is made possible by an endowment established by family and friends of the late Richard B. Salomon.
