LogicLounge with Eva Galperin: Spouseware and Stalkerware

Powerful surveillance software for everyday use is widely available on the internet for affordable prices. Some are marketed as ways for employers to monitor the movements of their workers, or for parents to check electronically on the whereabouts of their children. Others promise to help you to reveal infidelity.

The spyware apps tune in your calls, text messages, real-time GPS location or encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp. What is the impact of spouseware/stalkware industry on your everyday life? Where do the tech community, the police, and the policymakers stand on the issue of surveillance for private purposes?

The speaker of this public debate is Eva Galperin, a cyber security specialist whose goal is to raise a debate on spyware for mobile phones after discovering that such spyware was often used in sexual harassment and violence against women, as well as child abuse.

About the speaker

Eva Galperin is Director of Cybersecurity at Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the head of EFF’s Threat Lab. Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. Her work is primarily focused on providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. To that end, she has applied the combination of her political science and technical background to everything from organizing EFF’s Tor Relay Challenge, to writing privacy and security training materials (including Surveillance Self Defense, the Security Education Companion, and the Digital First Aid Kit), and publishing research on malware in Syria, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, and Lebanon. Most recently, she has set her sights on eliminating the tools that domestic abusers use for surveillance of their partners.

Organizers

The LogicLounge with Eva Galperin is hosted by the 31st International Conference on Computer-Aided Verification (CAV), and organized by Zvonimir Rakamaric, University of Utah in collaboration with Georg Weissenbacher, TU Wien, and the Vienna Center for Logic and Algorithm (VCLA).

The LogicLounge was born at the Vienna Summer of Logic in 2014, which brought together almost 3000 scientists in the fields of logic, philosophy, mathematics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Since then it has been traveling the world as a regular event at the Conference on Computer Aided Verification (CAV). The LogicLounge series is hosted by Vienna Center for Logic and Algorithms at TU Wien, Austria. The recording of past LogicLounges is here.
