London Moderne

Join ADSNY and the Beaux Arts Alliance for this illustrated lecture by David Gerrard Lowe exploring the luxurious Art Deco and Moderne style of London.

When one hears the word Art Deco, one usually can’t help but think of Paris and New York, but in the 1920s and 1930s, London gave birth to some of the most extraordinary Art Deco structures in the world.

In his presentation, Lowe will lead us on a delightful trip to a chic, exciting period in London, when people traveled to England on the Queen Mary and checked into the redesigned Claridge’s or the moderne masterpiece, the Savoy. He will show us the massive BBC Broadcasting House with its stunning sculpture by Eric Gill and the jazzy Express building with its black glass façade. Another highlight will include images of the New Victoria cinema where, on the silver screen, Jessie Matthews once sang and danced her way into the public’s heart.
