Join us for a screening and discussion with Luiz Roque and curator Margot Norton. This program is held in conjunction with Roque’s Screens Series exhibition, on view on the New Museum’s Lower Level through January 26, 2020.
Roque’s films interweave imagined modernities with anthropomorphized forms in richly textured cinematic compositions. His open-ended narratives envision intersections between sci-fi landscapes, animal protagonists, and modernist objects and architecture, concocting dreamlike atmospheres that are at once prehistoric and postapocalyptic, familiar and surreal. Following a screening of five of his short films—O Novo Monumento (2013), Modern (2014), Ancestral (2017), S (2017), and Zero (2019)—Roque and Norton will discuss themes that run throughout the artist’s oeuvre, including modernity, temporal displacement, and fluid expressions of the body.
Luiz Roque (b. 1979, Cachoeira do Sul, Brazil) lives and works in São Paulo.
