Lunchtime Lecture Series “ABC (Always Be Composing)” with Ephraim Rubenstein

“The four edges of your canvas are the first four lines of your composition”- Hans Hofmann

Composition – the organization of shapes and rhythms on a flat surface – is one of the great tools we have in painting. Much touted ‘rules’ of composition seem so problematic, as they are always riddled with innumerable exceptions. More profitable, perhaps, are ‘strategies’ for thinking about composition.

Ephraim Rubenstein has had 11 one-person exhibitions in New York, at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, Tatistcheff & Co. and most recently at George Billis Gallery in Chelsea. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Rubenstein was Associate Professor of Art at the University of Richmond from 1987-1998, where he received the Distinguished Educator Award and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently on the faculty at Columbia University and the Art Students League of New York.
