Johnny Mercer said, “We all come from (W. S.) Gilbert.”
Together with composer Sir Arthur Sullivan, this lyricist produced 14 comic operettas that are still performed throughout the world. Gilbert’s mastery at intricate rhymes and a skewering wit have made him lionized by generations of lyricists like Harburg, Porter, Coward, Hart and Gershwin. His comic DNA can be traced from The Mikado to My Fair Lady.
