Magie Dominic at New York Public Library

Magie Dominic comes to St. Agnes to read from her two memoirs: The Queen of Peace Room and Street Angel.

In The Queen of Peace Room, Magie Dominic  explores her life, that of a Newfoundlander turned New Yorker, an artist and a writer — and frees herself from the memories of her violent past. The Queen of Peace Room, was shortlisted for the Canadian Women’s Studies Award, ForeWordmagazine’s Book of the Year Award, and the Judy Grahn Award.

Street Angel reveals Magie’s life through flashbacks, humour, and her signature self-confidence, taking readers from 1950s Newfoundland to 1960s Pittsburgh, 1970s New York, and the end of the millennium in Toronto. Capturing the long days of childhood, this book questions how important those days are in shaping who we become as we age and time seems to speed up. Street Angel received the Silver Medal from Independent Publishers Awards and was short listed for Book of the Year/memoir by Foreword Magazine.

Excerpts, among others, will briefly include: childhood in a small Newfoundland town; actress with the original Off-Off Broadway movement in the 1960’s; life as a writer of poetry, essays and memoir; impact on friends during the AIDS crisis in the 1980’s; life in Manhattan.

Dominic is a past contributor to The Village VoiceThe Globe and Mail, and commondreams.org. She currently resides in Chelsea.
