Making Films that Matter: Media Studies 40th Anniversary Alumni Film Screening

The School of Media Studies at The New School celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year with exciting feature-length, short films and videos made by its alumni. On Friday, November 13th, we will showcase award-winning shorts made by graduates from Bosnia, Canada, Hong Kong/PRC, Israel, Korea, Lebanon, and the United States. Five of the filmmakers will be present to speak about their work and the role of the School of Media Studies in helping to forge their careers. Elida Schogt, who graduated in 1999, will come from Toronto to discuss her trilogy of films on the Holocaust; Tal Shamir will speak about his Student Academy Award-winning experimental film on art; and Jessica Edwards, whose documentary feature Mavis will air on HBO this winter, will talk about her short on a fast disappearing New York beverage.  We are proud to present works by some of our most distinguished graduates, such as Lebanese video artist and archivist Akram Zaatari, who graduated in 1994; his work has been shown around the globe in museums, galleries, and media festivals, including a recent Projects show at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Some of the works scheduled to be screened were made by graduates of the Documentary Studies Program, a one-year graduate certificate in documentary history, theory, and production that is now in its tenth year. Reception to follow.
