Manhattan’s First ‘It’ Girl

As the newspapers reported, she arrived in New York City in 1900 with “nothing but her looks.” Embodying the dynamic cultural change that was happening at the time, sixteen-year old Evelyn Nesbit quickly became the face (and figure) of the new century: Manhattan’s first “It” Girl. Nesbit was unusually photogenic—one reporter described her as “the soul of beauty trapped behind big melancholy eyes”—and her likeness soon appeared everywhere, depicting Gilded Age glamour, beauty and elegance. As a Christy girl, Gibson Girl, and cover girl, she moved easily between cold marble sculpture and a hot new technology called photography–with a face to die for, literally.
