One of Mexico’s leading investigative journalists uncovers the true story behind the 2014 disappearance of 43 college students at the hands of law enforcement officials in the Mexican city of Iguala.

On September 26, 2014, law enforcement officials in the Mexican city of Iguala murdered six people and disappeared 43 students from Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College on their way to a protest. Rather than investigate the causes and track down the perpetrators, almost immediately various state agencies and government officials conspired to put together a fake case. To this day, those responsible for the violence have not been brought to justice, and the fate of the disappeared students remains uncertain. Risking her own life to bring the facts of this story to light, investigative journalist Anabel Hernández reconstructs the terrible events of that night and its aftermath. Relying on internal documents that were never made public and on surveillance footage the government tried to hide and destroy, A Massacre in Mexico exposes the depths of corruption in the Mexican government and police force—as well as the profound vulnerability of ordinary Mexican citizens.

Hernández will speak about her reporting process and what drove her quest for truth with Nation contributor John Washington, who also translated the book—and whom she will be meeting for the first time on stage.
