Masters of the Graphic Novel: Blutch and Burns

French cartoonist Blutch and American Charles Burns are both known for their poignant graphic storytelling, distinctive mastering of black and white and exploration of art forms such as illustration and animation.

New Yorker art editor Françoise Mouly will discuss their similarities but also the differences of creating graphic novels in France and the USA.

Françoise Mouly was a co-founder of the pioneering indie-comics magazine RAW, and is founder and publisher of TOON Books, an award-winning series of visual narratives for young readers. She is also the art editor of THE NEW YORKER magazine, and recently co-published RESIST!, a comics magazine of political resistance, with her daughter, Nadja Spiegelman.

Charles Burns is a cartoonist and creator of the award-winning graphic novel BLACK HOLE, as well as a series of books collecting short stories published in magazines. His most recent work is the trilogy collected in 2016 as LAST LOOK. He is a noted illustrator, and his work has been featured on album covers, in animation, and as part of choreographer Mark Morris’ “The Hard Nut.”

Blutch is a renowned French cartoonist, who won the Grand Prix of the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angouleme in 2009. His work has been published in French comics magazines such as FLUIDE GLACIAL and À SUIVRE, as well as in several books by publishers Cornelius, Dargaud, Dupuis. His series, PEPLUM, was recently published in English by New York Review Comics and Europe Comics is releasing in English and digital format some of his other books.
