Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders

Sherry C.M. Lindquist and Asa Mittman, co-curators of the exhibit Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, and Wonders at the Morgan Library and Museum (June 8 – September 23), will discuss how artists in the European Middle Ages employed the versatile iconography of monsters — dragons, giants, griffins, exotic peoples, demons, comic hybrids and indeterminate horrors — to express vital ideas and address pressing concerns. They will consider the cultural work monsters did (and do) to enhance the aura of those in power; to stigmatize “the Other”; and to mobilize the power of the human imagination.

A book signing follows the event.
