Meet Shobha Rao, Author of Girls Burn Brighter

Please join us for a conversation with Girls Burn Brighter’s author Shobha Rao, as she makes a rare appearance in NYC.

Shobha Rao moved to the United States from India at the age of seven. She is the author of the short story collection An Unrestored Woman. She is the winner of the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction, and her story “Kavitha and Mustafa” was chosen by T. C. Boyle for inclusion in Best American Short Stories 2015.

“The book tackles issues like the sexism, sexual assault, and human trafficking that are present in modern India. It also provides an outside perspective on America and highlights the enslavement of those captured by human traffickers. For a book from a major publishing house to use fiction in order to touch on these important and horribly relevant topics is a step toward creating a conversation about issues that may not be addressed openly.” –McKenzie Caldwell, The Coil
