Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners. A weekend gathering orchestrated by a prosperous French aristocrat and his Viennese wife lays bare ugly truths about the guests including the host’s scheming mistress, a friend who is secretly in love with the wife, and her lover. In the classic upstairs/downstairs style, the servants see all and mock their employers.

Written and directed by Jean Renoir. In French; English subtitles.
Run Time: 1h 50 min. Not Rated.

This film takes place in Gilder Lehrman Hall on the Ground Floor. Doors to the Hall will open 30 minutes before the film begins. Attendees are encouraged to visit the exhibition Renoir Drawings during their museum visit.
