Mudfish 20 Reading: Jill Hoffman, Philip Schultz, Erica Jong, and Jennifer Belle

Box Turtle Press presents a star-studded launch of Mudfish 20, with readings by Erica Jong, Philip Schultz, Jennifer Belle, and Jill Hoffman. The issue is dedicated to the late John Ashbery, and poet, artist, and Mudfish editor Doug Dorph, featuring new work by Donald Hall, three collages by John Ashbery, and with a portrait of Donald Hall on the front cover and his wife, the late Jane Kenyon on the back. It is a collection filled with unforgettable poems and stories, punctuated by relevant art. Erica Jong is a celebrated poet, novelist & essayist with over 25 published books that have been influential all over the world. Her most popular novel, Fear of Flying celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013. Never out of print, it has sold over 37 million copies in 42 languages including Chinese and Arabic. Erica’s latest novel, Fear of Dying was published in 2015/2016 all over the world. Her awards include the Fernanda Pivano Award for Literature in Italy (named for the critic who introduced Ernest Hemingway, Allen Ginsberg, and Erica Jong to the Italian public); the Sigmund Freud Award in Italy; the Deauville Literary Award in France; the United Nations Award for Excellence in Literature; Poetry Magazine’s Bess Hokin Prize. Erica’s poetry has appeared in publications worldwide, including The New Yorker, and L.A. Philip Schultz, the judge of the Mudfish 20 Poetry Prize, is the founder/director of The Writers Studio, a private school for fiction and poetry writing based in New York City. He is the author of seven collections of poetry, including Failure (Harcourt, 2007), winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, and a just published book of poetry, Luxury (W.W. Norton). A poem about googling other Philip Schultzs has recently been published in The New Yorker. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship in Poetry to Israel and a 2005 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry. Schultz is also the author of a memoir, My Dyslexia, published by W.W. Norton in 2011. Philip Schultz lives in East Hampton, NY with his wife, sculptor Monica Banks and their two sons, Elias and August.
Jennifer Belle is the best-selling author of four novels—Going Down (named best debut novel of the year by New York Magazine), High Maintenance, Little Stalker, and The Seven Year Bitch—all of which have been optioned for the screen. Her novels have been translated into thirteen languages. She has also published seven young adult novels written under two pseudonyms and Animal Stackers, a picture book for children. Stories, poems and essays have appeared in Mudfish, The New York Times Magazine, The Independent Magazine (London), Ms., Elle, Self, Harper’s Bazaar, Blackbook, and many anthologies. She has been teaching writing since 1999 and been thanked on dozens of acknowledgment pages. She lives in New York with her husband and two sons, and writes at the Writers’ Room.
Jill Hoffman is the Founding Editor of Mudfish (Box Turtle Press), and the Mudfish Individual Poet Series. Box Turtle Press has just published The Gates of Pearl, a mother/daughter saga in two voices. Black Diaries (Mudfish Individual Poet Series # 2) was published in 2000. Her first book of poems, Mink Coat, was published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1973. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974-75. Jilted, a novel, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1993. She has a B.A. from Bennington College, an M.A. from Columbia University and a Ph. D. from Cornell University. She has taught in major universities (Bard, Barnard, Brooklyn, Columbia) and published in major magazines, such as The New Yorker and Paris Review. She has led the Mudfish Writing Workshop in Tribeca since 1990. She is also a painter.
