Municipal Art Society Presents: Jefferson Market Then and Now

This walk is short on distance and long on history of one of NYC’s most fascinating blocks, consisting of Jefferson Market Library and Jefferson Market Garden. We will discuss the evolution of this parcel of land from a food market in the 1830s to a courthouse and women’s prison and ultimately to a public library and garden. We will also explore notable sites including Patchin Place, Milligan Place, and the Second Spanish and Portuguese Cemetery.
