Sandeep will be going thru some of his favorite Indian States (both Convention and Feudatory) items in his collection.

The princely states of India were territories ruled by princes, which were, in turn, controlled by the British Empire Raj. During the establishment of the British occupation of India the feudal arrangements changed many times, some local rulers signed an agreement with the British to become a “princely state”, and often the British rewarded their supporters with control of a “princely state”. This arrangement was similar to the “governorships” in the Americas. A postal union was considered a sign of greater allegiance to the British. The number of states can only be estimated and varies between 562 and over 700; there were 565 sates when the British left India in 1947.

The stamps of the Indian States are divided between the five states that signed Conventions with the British. This Convention allowed that allowed them to use the British-printed stamps of India, overprinted with the name of the state, and valid for postage both within the state and in the parts of India where the British had postal service. The Feudatory states were allowed to print their stamps for use within the state. The complexity of the relationships with the British Empire and the number of diverse Indian states and cultures makes this a fascinating area for collectors.
