Native Amazonian Drawings

Native drawings produced in the Amazon basin during the 1970s, an area practically untouched by outside human civilization, have only recently emerged, decades later. The newly discovered artworks examine the daily lives of Native Amazonian tribes through materials previously unavailable to them such as paper, brushes, and paint. Given to anthropologists, the drawings offer a unique interpretation inside an isolated society with themes ranging from geometrical designs, anthropomorphic figures, landscapes, and mythological beings. The drawings convey a purely visual perspective, one detached by the progression and discourse of art history.

This program is presented by The National Arts Club in partnership with Shin Gallery.
