Walk Without Rhythm: The Weirdo Marketing of David Lynch’s Dune

by Chris Cummins

Description:  Although not a terrific adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi tale, David Lynch’s 1984 film version of Dune is a defining moment in oddball cinema — and a candidate for the weirdest mainstream movie ever made. This is a film that includes everything from a spermy-looking alien that lives in a fish tank to a morbidly obese man who frequently needs to get his pustules drained, so yeah, hardly not fun for the entire family. But this didn’t stop marketing people from trying to sell this shithouse bonkers flick as the next Star Wars. In this presentation, Chris Cummins (Nerd Nite Philadelphia, Den of Geek, Sci-Fi Explosion) will discuss the crazy ways that Dune was marketed and merchandised, including a card that was given out to moviegoers in an attempt to explain the often incomprehensible events unfolding onscreen as well as the most violent and disturbing/hilarious coloring book ever made. All of this, plus a tribute to everyone’s favorite cinematic canine — Dune Pug! The sleeper has awakened, and he will attempt to make sense of all this strangeness surrounding a true motion picture experience.

Bio: Chris Cummins is a Philadelphia-based writer whose work has appeared online at Den of Geek, Uproxx, Philebrity, Geekadelphia, and Topless Robot. He is also one of the Nerd Nite Philadelphia co-bosses, and the producer/host of the travelling comedy video shows Sci-Fi Explosion and Music Video Book Club. Women and the Black Panther Party
by Robyn Spencer

Description: Oakland shaped the evolution of the Black Panther Party, and the city served as the launching point for the BPP’s nationwide expansion and critical social programs for communities of color. Learn about the history of strong women in the Bay Area Black Panther Party, the fight against the FBI’s counterintelligence program, and the sometimes forgotten stories of Panthers’ progressive political alliances, alternative community schooling and focus on LGBTQ rights that continue to shape California’s culture today.

Bio: Robyn C. Spencer is the author of The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender and the Black Panther Party and a historian at Lehman College in the Bronx (robyncspencer.com). She teaches courses on gender, Black radicalism and social protest after WWII. She continues to bring the Sixties back to life in her next book on the anti-Vietnam War movement in the Black community.

*Presentation #3
Black Earth, Red Earth, and Lumpy Beer: The Cuisine of Ancient Egypt

by Andrew Coletti

Description: After a long, hard day hauling pyramid stones or wrapping up mummies, an Ancient Egyptian needed a decent meal. But what did the Egyptians eat, exactly? What were their staple crops, ingredients and livestock? How was food celebrated in Egyptian religion, and how different is Ancient Egyptian food from the food of modern Egypt? In this talk, we’ll discover the answers to these questions and more, as we explore the role of food in Ancient Egyptian culture, literature and art.

Bio: Andrew Coletti is an educator and lifelong history/mythology/fantasy nerd who has been known to throw ancient dinner parties just for fun. Follow his recreations of ancient recipes on passtheflamingo.com, or @passtheflamingo on Instagram and Twitter.
