You’ve heard the salacious stories about Justine Sacco, Jian Ghomeshi, #MeToo, etc. and you’ve watched as Trump said Obama was born in Kenya, called African countries “shittholes” and characterized Mexican immigrants as rapists. What is the state of shame in the twenty-first century? Is it alive and well? Or largely dead? What role has it played through pre-history, history, and how is it being mobilized today? What aspects of shame make it work well or not? What does that even mean? We will discuss the latest research into shame as a tool and go beyond the gossip to find out what it is that makes shame so uncomfortable and, sometimes, our only hope.
