Never Ending Mysteries: An Informal Discussion of James Castle and Other Self-Taught Artists

David Breslin is DeMartini Family Curator and Director of the Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Previously Chief Curator at the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, he organized The Precarious and Harold Ancart: There Is No There There. As director of the Whitney’s collection, he most recently led the curatorial teams responsible for Where We Are: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1900-1960 and An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940-2017.

Phillip March Jones is an artist, writer, and curator based in NYC. In 2009, he founded Institute 193, a non-profit contemporary art space and publisher in Lexington, Kentucky. Jones later served as the inaugural director of Atlanta’s Souls Grown Deep Foundation and currently directs the Andrew Edlin Gallery.

Ann Percy holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, and has been curator of drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1972.  She has organized a number of exhibitions on Italian 17th and 18th century subjects and, more recently, shows in the Outsider field, including James Castle: A Retrospective (2008) and “Great and Mighty Things”: Outsider Art from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection (2013).

Karen Wilkin is an independent curator and critic, a regular contributor to New Criterion, the Wall Street Journal, and Hudson Review. She teaches the New York Studio School’s M.F.A. art history seminars.
