The New Yorker Festival: Ava DuVernay Talks with Jelani Cobb

Ava DuVernay is a writer, director, and producer. Her most recent film, “13th,” was nominated for the 2017 Academy Award for best documentary feature. Her previous film, “Selma,” was nominated for the 2015 Academy Award for best picture, and DuVernay was nominated for the Golden Globe for best director. Her other film work includes the drama “Middle of Nowhere,” which won an award at Sundance, and the critically acclaimed television series “Queen Sugar.” Her seventh film, “A Wrinkle in Time,” will be released worldwide in March, 2018.

Jelani Cobb has contributed to The New Yorker and newyorker.com since 2012, and became a staff writer in 2015. He writes frequently about race, politics, history, and culture. His most recent book is “The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress.” A professor at the Columbia Journalism School, he won the 2015 Sidney Hillman Prize for opinion and analysis journalism, for his columns on race, the police, and injustice.
