‘New York’s Greatest Mayors & Governors: DeWitt Clinton’ Webinar

How did New York go from a debaucherous company town to the financial, fashion, intellectual, and cultural capital of the world? While there are many to commend, at the top of the list would be a handful of mayors and governors whose tireless efforts behind the scenes — in and out of office — helped their beloved city and state prosper for decades to come. It’s time to shine a spotlight on the city and state government leaders who not only shaped and influenced the region’s history, but also determined the growth and success of the entire country.

Join New York Adventure Club for the first chapter of a series exploring New York’s greatest mayors and governors, and their profound impact on the Empire State before, during, and after their time in office. Working our way toward the modern day, Chapter I will focus on DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) — without question one of the most important people in New York’s 400 year history, Clinton altered the political geography of the nation and set an example for activist government thanks to his lead role in spearheading the New York Grid System and Erie Canal, which both decisively secured New York City’s position as America’s first and foremost metropolis.

Led by New York City historian Kevin Draper, our spotlight on DeWitt Clinton and his remarkable achievements will include:

  • Why Clinton decided to enter politics at such an early age
  • discussion of Clinton’s greatest achievements while as New York City mayor, which included ushering in the New York Grid System, expanding / improving the New York Public School system, promoting legislation that removed voting restrictions against Roman Catholics, and establishing various public-welfare institutions
  • Clinton’s incredible political career before and after his mayoral terms, which included multiple positions in New York State government (Assemblyman, Senator, Governor) a stint as United States Senator, and Presidential Candidate (narrowly lost to James Madison in 1812)
  • His lasting legacy as New York State Governors for helping build the Erie Canal, which singlehandedly made New York City into a global metropolis seemingly overnight
  • A look at his leadership roles outside of politics, from being a founding member of the New-York Historical Society, to Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of the Freemasons in NY, to member of the N.Y. Society of the Cincinnati

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Kevin — any and all questions about DeWitt Clinton are welcomed and encouraged!
