Nicole Dennis-Benn with her novel “Here Comes the Sun” at Revolution Books

This Friday night, Revolution Books in Harlem will host NICOLE DENNIS-BENN with her acclaimed first novel Here Comes the Sun.
“I wanted to delve into the lives of these three women as a way to parallel the exploitation of the land with the exploitation of the female body.” –Nicole Dennis-Benn
The novel takes place at an opulent resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It is played out through the eyes of three black women at three different stages of life. Sheltered teenager Thandi is entering adulthood with uncertainty. Her older sister Margot is twice Thandi’s age, in love with another woman, and using sex work with the island’s tourists to put Thandi through school. Their mother, Delores, charms tourists with the souvenirs she sells, but is hard and angry towards her daughters.
“An expertly timed examination of race, class, gender and sexuality, weaved seamlessly into an engaging narrative. “
–The Guardian
“Dennis-Benn’s writing is so assured, so gorgeous, that it’s hard to believe Here Comes the Sun is a debut novel.” –National Public Radio
Named A Best Book of 2016 by: New York Times, NPR, Buzzfeed, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Root.
Nicole Dennis-Benn was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. She has received numerous writing fellowships. She was recently appointed a Professor of English at CCNY.
