Nordic Book Club: Clearing Out by Helene Uri
Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club. Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions typically take place the last Tuesday of the month in the Halldór Laxness Library at Scandinavia House and online in our Goodreads group during the last week of the month.
This month, we’re reading Clearing Out by Helene Uri, winner of the ASF Nadia Christensen Prize for its translation by Barbara Sjoholm. When an author learns early in the stages of writing a novel that her great-grandfather was a Sami fisherman — something that her own family had never discussed — she decides to send her protagonist north to learn about the Sami culture in Finnmark. Over the course of writing the novel, both she and her character follow a journey of cultural discovery.
