NYC’s Tech Economy After COVID-19: The Way Back and the Way Forward

The coronavirus has devastated Gotham, in terms of human life (5% of US cases, 16% of US deaths), and economically (1.25 million jobs lost since the quarantine began, the sharpest decline since the Great Depression). Among the present fears is the concern that both the city’s economy and its central business districts will be drastically weakened, with leases upended, restaurants closed, and 1.6 million people, 35 % of the labor-force, working from home and meeting online. Yet over the past twenty years, thanks to efforts by government, business, and the non-profit sector, Gotham has become a fast-growing rival to Silicon Valley in digital technology, continuing its historic role as a leader in finance and media and building an “innovation complex” that made New York, especially Brooklyn, the second-fastest growing tech hub in the country. Can the city find its way back to economic growth after COVID-19 without ceding power to Big Tech? How should it chart the way forward?
