In the Summer of 1940, after the Nazi occupation of Poland, an underground operative called Witold Pilecki accepted a mission to uncover the fate of thousands of people being interred at a new concentration camp on the border of the Reich—the Auschwitz concentration camp, the epicenter of Hitler’s Final Solution. Unimaginably, one unsung Polish patriot, Witold Pilecki, orchestrated his own arrest and incarceration in the death camp in order to establish a resistance network against the Nazis. Over the next two and half years, Witold forged an underground army that smuggled evidence of Nazi atrocities out of Auschwitz. His reports from the camp were to shape the Allies response to the Holocaust, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. The Volunteer resurrects a story of resistance and heroism in the face of unbridled evil and seemingly unconquerable despair.
