Online—The Fight for Freedom—A Live Conversation with Photographer Martin Schoeller and Witness to Innocence Exonerees

Photographer Martin Schoeller partnered with Witness To Innocence, because he was “appalled by state sponsored murders”. This exhibition consists of ten video portraits of individuals who share their stories of how they were convicted and sentenced to death row for crimes they did not commit. Today we will hear from two of them in conversation with Martin.

Witness to Innocence is the nation’s only organization dedicated to empowering exonerated death row survivors to be the most powerful and effective voice in the struggle to end the death penalty in the United States. Each work in the exhibition is presented as a close-up style video portrait of the exoneree while their interview with Schoeller about their experience on death row plays out loud. The accompanying wall texts include a statement by each sitter, along with statistics regarding the inequalities of the American justice system.

Through live conversations like this one, WTI’s members are helping to end the death penalty by educating the public about innocence and wrongful convictions. WTI also provides an essential network of peer support for the exonerated, most of whom received no compensation or access to reentry services when released from death row.

This event will be just ahead of October 10th to bring awareness to World Against Death Penalty Day.

Donations to Witness To Innocence are encouraged but not required at registration for the livestream.
