Opening Reception: Real People. Real Lives. Women Immigrants of New York Community Partnership Exhibition Program

Join us for the opening event of our new exhibit Real People. Real Lives. Women Immigrants of New York at the Queens Museum. The event will be hosted by New Women New Yorkers’ executive director Arielle Kandel, artist Dru Blumensheid, and project participants.

Along with the showing of the exhibit, guests will invited to contribute to a nearly 20-feet-long mural, and will enjoy a live soundtrack by dreeemy of the collective BAE, a NYC-based healing and music arts community empowering female creators.

A light meal of mixed Iraqi and Nepali tastes from Eat Offbeat, prepared by refugees resettled in New York, will be offered.

Books, postcards, and an exclusive set of photographic prints will be offered for sale at a pop-up shop, and artist Dru Blumensheid will meet guests and sign books.

About the exhibit:

Real People. Real Lives. Women Immigrants of New York features art and fashion photographs of 16 young immigrant women in iconic NYC spots and neighborhoods, together with audio recordings of their stories, a nearly 20-feet-long living mural, and video projections. It shows a nuanced and multi-layered picture of the immigrant women who make NYC their home, of the barriers and isolation they experience, and of the hopes, dreams, and talents they bring with them.
