Part of the The Opera Stage Director’s Point of View series
Are stage directors a necessary evil or essential part of the success of an opera production? With almost 40 years in the field, and more than 200 productions in the U.S. and abroad, Jay Lesenger discusses the history and emergence of stage directors in opera and charts his own career path. Learn the secrets and hear behind-the-scenes stories of a career staging opera.
In his second lecture, Jay Lesenger illustrates the complex process of bringing an opera production from the composer’s score to the stage, using set models, sketches, photographs, and video from some of his recent productions including Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Thea Musgrave’s Pontalba, and John Corigliano/William H. Hoffman’s The Ghosts of Versailles, among others.
