Ostiafest: Ancient Wall Paintings at Ostia Antica and Beyond

A celebration of the art of ancient wall painting: presentations, talks, workshops, and a reception featuring Ancient Roman snacks!

Join scientists, archeologists, art historians, and architects from the Pratt Community and beyond for this two day symposium on the art of ancient wall painting, focusing on the incredible collection of frescoes at the Ancient Roman port city of Ostia Antica. Pratt students have been assisting with a study on the use of Egyptian blue and other ancient pigments in Ostia’s wall paintings, led by Pratt Professor Eleonora Del Federico in partnership with the Mathematics and Science Department of Pratt Institute, the Department of History, Art and Archeology at the Universite Catholique of Louvain, Belgium and the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

Other events include presentations by partners in the study from Universities and Academic institutions around the world, talks helping to put the creation of these frescoes in historical, artistic, and architectural context, and even a mini fresco making workshop (please register at http://bit.ly/ostiafest if you are interested in participating!).

The symposium will culminate in a reception and poster session by Pratt student researchers who participated in the study in Pratt Studios Gallery 200 on February 26 from 6:00 – 8:00. Ancient Roman snacks will be served!

All are welcome to attend these free presentations, workshops, and the reception! Please visit http://bit.ly/ostiafest for the full schedule and to RSVP!
