Our Road to Freedom: Jab, J'ouvert, Revelry & Resistance
When: Sat, Jun 20 at 1:00pm - 8:00pm
Price: $25
The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) marks Juneteenth with its second annual celebration, grounded in its 50th Anniversary Year exhibition curated by Know Your Caribbean. This year's program centers on Carnival as a ritual of liberation — drawing on the alignment of Juneteenth, the summer solstice, and Elegua's Feast Day.
The day begins with a special exhibition tour at the CCCADI Firehouse, followed by a procession to the Harlem African Burial Grounds and on to CCCADI Ilé Oyin. There, Kalinda Kollective leads a workshop on kalinda — the ancient stickfighting warrior tradition from Trinidad & Tobago, brought to the Caribbean by enslaved Africans from the Congo, Yoruba, and Fon nations, and preserved through Carnival. A Curators in Conversation panel with Know Your Caribbean and exhibition artists follows, closing with a Carnival fête and live DJ set by DJ Jen Jen.
Featuring: Exhibition tour with Know Your Caribbean · Processional · Kalinda workshop · Curators in Conversation · Carnival fête with DJ Jen Jen
