Panel: Understanding Human Trafficking as It Impacts New York

Human trafficking encompasses labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking. The Amnesty Local Groups are 1) addressing how trafficking is hidden in our communities; 2) illustrating the complexities in addressing the issue for both civil and political institutions; 3) explaining the complexities for law enforcement and legal entities to address the issue of both crime and victim adequately.

Amnesty International, with Ethical Culture, is endeavoring to provide channels of action for all concerned to express their intention through concerted actions, and to express their outrage and their desire to both publicize and eradicate these conditions

The Moderator:

CHRISTINE OKIKE, who has worked on T-visa matters and has assisted at the Human Trafficking Intervention Court in Queens as part of Sanctuary for Families Anti-Trafficking Pilot Initiative

The Panelists:

NANCY RIVARD, President and Founder of Airline Ambassadors International, which works closely with Customs Border Protection to develop training tailored to airline/ airport personnel, hotel employees, law enforcement and ground transportation to identify trafficking incidents on airlines.

RABBI RACHEL KAHN-TROSTER, Director of Education and Outreach for Rabbis for Human Rights, who will speak on slavery in our supply chain, on investor advocacy, and on agricultural slavery.

GABRIELLE FONROUGE, National Correspondent and Investigative Reporter for the New York Post, who will discuss how traffickers use the Internet.

JAMES KLEIN, Inspector and Commanding Officer of the Vice Unit of the NYPD

THOMAS MILANO, Captain and Commanding Officer of the Major Case Teams (which include the Human Trafficking Team) of the NYPD, will speak about the changes in NYPD VICE and how enforcement law is helping to end trafficking.

Note: This is part 2 of a 3-part series on Human Trafficking. In September, we presented the documentary film, “Trafficked in America.” And next month, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3, we will have a Book Discussion of The Slave Next Door, by Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter.
