The Other Paris: The Shadow Side of 19th Century Paris | Lecture and Book Signing with Luc Sante SOLD OUT

Join Luc Sante, author of “Low Life,” for a talk based on his new book “The Other Paris,” which provides a panoramic view of the nearly vanished shadow side of The City of Light. Drawing on testimony from witnesses such as Balzac and Hugo along with assorted boulevardiers, rabble-rousers, and tramps-Sante, the book scuttles through the knotted streets of pre-Haussmann Paris, through the improvised accommodations of the original bohemians, through the whorehouses and dance halls and hobo shelters of the old city, touching on labor conditions, prostitution, drinking, crime, and popular entertainment, as well as the reporters, réaliste singers, pamphleteers, and poets who chronicled their evolution.
