Deutsches Haus at NYU presents a conversation between Mark Lilla, Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University, and writer Andrea Köhler to discuss her new book Passing Time: An Essay on Waiting. In this wide-ranging meditation on the ways in which human beings are compelled — and choose — to mark time, from earliest childhood to the final moments of life, Köhler explores the ordeals and pleasures inherent in the universal experience of waiting.

Andrea Köhler is the New York based  cultural correspondent for the Swiss daily newspaper Neue Züricher Zeitung. Aside from Passing Time: An Essay on Waiting, she has also published Scham (zu KLAMPEN! Verlag, 2017), Das Tier und wir (Hoffmann und Campe, 2010) und Kleines Glossar des Verschwindens (C. H. Beck 2003). She is the recipient of the 2003 Berlin Book Critics Prize, Max Kade Fellowship 2004 and received a Fellowship at the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy for her upcoming book on States of Mind.

Mark Lilla is Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University and an award-winning contributor to the New York Review of Books. His most recent books are The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics (2017) and The Shipwrecked Mind: On Political Reaction (2016).
