‘Paterson, NJ: Alexander Hamilton’s Planned City of Industry’ Webinar

While Alexander Hamilton is best known for establishing the First Bank of the United States, penning most of the Federalist Papers, and even founding the New York Post, one of his most important accomplishments is largely overlooked. This is the story of the creation of Paterson, NJ, America’s first planned city of industry and innovation, which became one of the largest and most productive economies in the world by the late 1800s — fulfilling Hamilton’s vision of an economically independent United States.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the history of Paterson, NJ, the “Silicon Valley” of the 19th and early 20th centuries that became a leading global manufacturing hub for industries including locomotives, silk, and airplane engines.

Led by Giacomo De Stefano, Director of the Paterson Museum, this digital dive into the incredible city of Paterson will include:

  • The rich Native American history of Paterson and the surrounding areas
  • primer on the city’s origins and where Alexander Hamilton fits into it
  • How the city’s planned system of water channels launched the city into the global spotlight, and the importance of Great Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the country
  • digital showcase of former production facilities that defined the city for generations, from the Paterson Museum (once a locomotive factory) to the Paterson Art Factory, a former 400,000-square-foot textile factory

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Giacomo — any and all questions about Paterson are welcomed and encouraged!
